What is a Onewheel?
The Onewheel is a mobility device that enables users to stand on a deck (similar to a skateboard) while being propelled by a single tire. The Onewheel is often referred to as a type of hoverboard or e-skateboard: a self-balancing, battery-powered transportation device.
Using their body weight, positioning, and balance, riders can propel themselves to speeds of up to 20 mph or more.
Onewheel is the first product created by Future Motion Inc. Established in 2013, the company has garnered a large number of followers and sold thousands of devices. They now sell the Onewheel Pint and the Onewheel XR.
Is the Onewheel defective?
While the Onewheel is intended to be a fun and fast way for riders to get around, it’s proven to be a dangerous device due to some possible defects.
Unfortunately, many riders out for what was supposed to be a leisurely ride have become victims of what’s known as the Onewheel nosedive.
The Onewheel nosedive is an accident in which the device’s motor shuts off and slams forward into the ground. This, in turn, causes the unsuspecting rider to nosedive off of their Onewheel.
The Onewheel is designed with a pushback feature. When the Onewheel has reached its speed limitations, climbs or descends hills, or when the battery is nearing empty, the pushback feature causes the motor to cut out. This feature is intended to serve as a warning to the rider that they could be in a potentially dangerous situation.
While the pushback is intended to keep riders safe, it can cause severe injuries and often inhibits riders’ ability to maintain their balance. Pushback can make it difficult to steer correctly and remain upright, leading to a nosedive off of the device.
When you work with the Ernst Law Group, we can investigate the cause of your accident and seek answers to the following questions:
- Did Future Motion Inc. fail to uphold its duties to design, manufacture, and market a safe device?
- Did Future Motion Inc. fail to warn customers of the risks of serious injury or death even when using the product as intended?
- Did Future Motion Inc. mislead customers into believing the Onewheel was a safe device?
What kind of injuries can a nosedive cause?
The Onewheel can reach speeds of up to 20 mph or more. When riders nosedive off of the device at these speeds, it can lead to serious and long-lasting injuries.
Some common injuries that can occur include:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
- Broken arms or legs
- Head trauma
- Neck injuries
- Broken collarbones
In May 2020, a Texas man even died as a result of a Onewheel nosedive accident. The man suffered severe brain trauma from his accident and later died during surgery.
If you have been injured in a Onewheel accident, we urge you to contact our legal team as soon as possible. You may be able to seek compensation for your damages that can help you recover from your injuries.
